Argentina secured their place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a commanding 2-0 win over Austria, powered once again by a decisive performance from captain Lionel Messi. The Argentine star scored twice in the match and also surpassed Germany’s Miroslav Klose to become the highest scorer in World Cup history.

The atmosphere in Dallas had already turned distinctly Argentine a day before kick-off, as thousands of fans gathered for the traditional “Banderazo” celebration. Draped in blue and white, the city echoed with chants and songs that transformed the Texas venue into a temporary extension of Buenos Aires.

Argentina had a chance to take an early lead after VAR awarded them a penalty. However, to the surprise of many supporters, Messi failed to convert, sending his shot wide of the post. It marked his first penalty miss for the national team since the 2022 World Cup.

The miss briefly unsettled Argentina’s rhythm, allowing Austria to push forward and attempt to build pressure through more aggressive attacking play.

Argentina eventually found their breakthrough in the 38th minute of the first half. A well-orchestrated attacking move involving Thiago Almada and Facundo Medina ended with the ball falling to Messi in a central position. The Argentine captain made no mistake, finishing calmly past the goalkeeper to give his side the lead.

With this strike, Messi also moved past Miroslav Klose to become the all-time top scorer in FIFA World Cup history.

After the break, Austria tried to respond, creating a few dangerous moments. Marcel Sabitzer’s free-kick tested the Argentine defence, but goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez reacted quickly to deny any equaliser.

Despite their efforts, Austria struggled to break through Argentina’s disciplined backline and was kept largely at bay throughout the contest.

In the closing stages of the match, Messi struck again to secure the victory and complete his brace. His second goal confirmed a 2-0 win for Argentina, ensuring their progression to the knockout rounds of the tournament.
