Tiruvallur Ammonia Leak: Death Toll Rises to 8, All Victims Women; Multiple Workers Affected

The death toll in the ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing facility in Tiruvallur district has risen to eight, with six more fatalities confirmed on Monday (June 22, 2026). All victims are women, including seven from Odisha and one from Assam, officials said.

According to the Health Department, a total of 77 people were affected in the industrial accident. Two deaths were reported on Sunday (June 21), followed by three more fatalities in the morning and two additional deaths later in the day on Monday.

At present, 68 individuals are undergoing treatment in various hospitals, while two patients have been discharged after recovery.

The injured workers are being treated across several medical facilities. Of them, 28 are admitted at Vels Hospital, 18 at Venkateswara Hospital, 12 at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), and 10 at Government Stanley Medical College Hospital.

Authorities have identified several of the deceased, including Shibani, Jumani Juang, Geetha Juanga, Purnima Juanga, Champabati Juanga, and Parbavathi Juanga. The identity of one victim remains unconfirmed.

The Health Department stated that it is continuously monitoring the situation and ensuring that all affected individuals receive timely and appropriate medical care. It is coordinating with district administration and hospitals to streamline treatment, surveillance, and emergency response efforts.

The incident took place on Sunday (June 21) at a private seafood processing and export unit located in the Kannigaipair/Manjangaranai area near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district. Preliminary reports suggest that the ammonia leak occurred during routine industrial operations, exposing workers present at the site.

Following the incident, emergency medical teams, district officials, police, fire and rescue services, and health authorities rushed to the spot. All affected individuals were immediately shifted to hospitals, and large-scale rescue operations were launched.
