Environmentalist and social activist Sonam Wangchuk is scheduled to be discharged from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Monday, July 27, 2026. Before heading back to his home state of Ladakh, he will visit Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi.
Sources close to Wangchuk said he is expected to leave the hospital at around 11:30 a.m. He has been recovering under medical supervision after ending his prolonged hunger strike and is now reported to be in stable condition.
Wangchuk concluded his 26-day indefinite fast on the night of July 24. The protest was launched in solidarity with students demonstrating against alleged irregularities in the NEET medical entrance examination, including claims of a question paper leak.
His campaign began on June 28, when he first paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat before starting his hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
During the protest, Wangchuk was moved to Safdarjung Hospital by authorities on July 18. At the time, he claimed he was being treated more like a detainee than a patient.
Following directions from the Delhi High Court, he was later transferred to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, where he continued to receive medical care while recovering from the effects of the fast.
The student-led agitation continued for 36 days under the leadership of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The protest officially ended on July 25, 2026, after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from his post, prompting organisers to call off the movement.
With his health improving, Wangchuk will begin his journey back to Ladakh after offering floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, marking the conclusion of a significant chapter in the student support movement.
