Iran’s Nuclear Programme Remains Top Concern for US, Says Marco Rubio

By: The Trek News Desk

The United States has reiterated its firm stance on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating that the issue continues to be the most critical challenge in relations with Iran.

Speaking during a media interview, Rubio responded to Tehran’s recent proposal, in which Iran suggested delaying discussions on its nuclear programme. In exchange, it offered to ease its control over the Strait of Hormuz and reduce regional tensions, provided the US lifts sanctions and ends ongoing hostilities.

Rubio made it clear that Washington remains deeply sceptical of Iran’s intentions. He warned that if the current regime in Iran continues, there is a strong possibility that it may eventually pursue nuclear weapons. According to him, this underlying concern remains at the heart of the conflict and must be addressed directly.

He further added that Iran is known for its strategic negotiation tactics and may be attempting to buy time through such proposals. In this context, Rubio emphasised that the US must remain cautious and avoid entering into any agreement without strict safeguards.

Highlighting America’s position, he said any future deal must ensure, beyond doubt, that Iran is permanently prevented from advancing towards nuclear weapon development.
