The European Union and Australia reached an agreement on the final draft of a long-pending Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. The landmark deal was formally signed at Australia’s Parliament House by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The agreement marks the conclusion of negotiations that began in 2018 and faced multiple hurdles along the way. Talks had previously stalled over Australia’s demand for greater access for its red meat exports and disagreements about the use of traditional European product names like “Prosecco.”

Speaking after the signing, Prime Minister Albanese described the deal as a major milestone in EU-Australia relations, noting that it reflects the outcome of eight years of persistent negotiations and is expected to open new avenues for trade cooperation.

Under the terms of the pact, Australian producers will be required to phase out the use of the name “Prosecco” for exports within a decade, as the term is traditionally associated with sparkling wine from Italy. In return, the EU will introduce tariff-rate quotas totalling 30,600 metric tons for Australian red meat, with more than half of the quota exempt from duties.

The agreement is also expected to strengthen the EU’s access to critical raw materials, enhancing supply chain security for key industries.

In addition to trade, both sides announced a new defence partnership aimed at boosting military cooperation. They also agreed to initiate discussions on Australia’s potential association with the EU’s research and innovation program, Horizon Europe.

Analysts believe the deal comes at a strategic time, as both the EU and Australia seek to diversify their trade relationships and reduce reliance on China, while also navigating uncertainties in global trade dynamics.
