West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI) amid a fresh controversy, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of influencing the constitutional body from behind the scenes.
The controversy erupted on March 23 after an official communication from the ECI was reportedly found bearing a stamp linked to the BJP’s Kerala unit. Reacting strongly, Banerjee dismissed the explanation of a “human error” and described the incident as a deliberate act rather than a clerical mistake.
Speaking to reporters at Kolkata airport before departing for Bagdogra, the Chief Minister said the development has exposed the forces allegedly operating behind the Commission. She added that such incidents raise serious concerns about the neutrality and credibility of democratic institutions responsible for conducting elections.

Calling for a united political response, Banerjee urged opposition parties across ideological lines to come together in defence of democracy. She alleged that there is an attempt to use the Election Commission as a tool to establish one-party dominance in the country.
“It does not matter whether parties belong to the Left or the Right. Everyone must stand together to resist this and ensure that free and fair elections are protected,” she said.
Banerjee left for Bagdogra in North Bengal, where she is set to begin her election campaign.
