The Central government has withdrawn the detention order issued against Ladakh-based activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA), nearly six months after he was taken into custody following violent protests in the region.
The decision comes just days before the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a petition filed by Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, challenging his detention under the stringent law. A bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and P.B. Varale is expected to hear the matter on March 17 (Tuesday). The court has already indicated that it will not entertain further arguments after that date.
Wangchuk was detained on September 26 last year under the NSA for allegedly being involved in instigating violent demonstrations that erupted in Ladakh on September 24. The protests had turned deadly after police firing reportedly resulted in the deaths of four people.
In a statement released on Saturday, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Home Affairs said that the detention was ordered by the District Magistrate of Leh to maintain public order following the serious law-and-order situation that emerged in the town on September 24. The spokesperson noted that Wangchuk has already spent nearly half of the maximum detention period allowed under the NSA.
The government also stated that it has been actively engaging with community leaders and other stakeholders in Ladakh to address the region’s concerns and aspirations. However, frequent shutdowns and protests have disrupted normal life and affected various sections of society, including students, job seekers, businesses, tourism operators and visitors, thereby impacting the local economy.

According to the statement, the Centre remains committed to maintaining peace, stability and mutual trust in Ladakh in order to facilitate meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders. With this objective in mind, the government decided to revoke Wangchuk’s detention with immediate effect by exercising the powers available under the NSA.
The government further reiterated its commitment to ensuring necessary safeguards and protections for Ladakh. It expressed hope that the issues concerning the region can be resolved through constructive dialogue, including discussions through a high-powered committee and other appropriate platforms.
