Global Press Freedom Declines as Political Pressure on Media Intensifies, Says Report

Press freedom across the world continues to weaken amid rising political pressure, according to the 2026 World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). The report highlights a worsening environment for journalism in a large majority of countries.

RSF notes that nearly three-quarters of the 180 countries assessed now fall into the “problematic” category or worse when it comes to media freedom. Only a small number of nations are considered to offer “satisfactory” conditions for journalists to work safely and independently.

The organisation defines press freedom as the ability of journalists to collect, produce, and distribute news in the public interest without political, economic, legal, or social interference, and without facing threats to their physical or mental safety.

According to the index, more than half of the countries studied are now classified as having “difficult” to “very serious” media environments. This marks a significant deterioration compared to 2013, when less than one-third of countries fell into these categories.

Regional differences remain stark. Europe continues to lead globally in press freedom, with Norway, Estonia, the Netherlands, and Denmark ranking at the top of the index. In contrast, many countries across Africa and Asia face severe restrictions, with journalists often operating under challenging and unsafe conditions.

The report also highlights notable disparities within regions. In Europe, northern and western countries generally maintain strong press freedom standards, while southern and eastern parts of the continent face more restrictions. Similarly, in Africa, journalists in northern countries experience comparatively tighter constraints than those in the south.

India’s ranking has also declined in the latest index, slipping from 151st to 158th position, reflecting growing concerns about media conditions in the country.

Overall, the report warns that weakening democratic values and increasing political influence over media institutions are contributing to a steady global decline in press freedom.
