In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, the coalition government led by Chief Minister Vijay successfully cleared the floor test in the state Assembly on Wednesday, securing a comfortable majority during the confidence vote.
A total of 144 Members of the Legislative Assembly voted in favour of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government, ensuring that the administration crossed the majority mark with ease.
During the proceedings, Opposition AIADMK leader and former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami urged party MLAs to adhere strictly to the party whip and not extend support to the government. He reminded members that the party had contested the elections unitedly and secured 47 seats, reaffirming AIADMK’s commitment to restoring what he described as “MGR and Amma-style governance” in the state.
The ruling alliance received backing from several key parties, including Congress, CPI(M), VCK, and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Congress contributed five MLAs in support, while CPI(M), VCK, and IUML added two MLAs each to the government’s strength.
Additionally, expelled AMMK MLA S. Kamaraj also voted in favour of the government, taking the total strength of the ruling coalition to 121 seats, well above the required majority in the Assembly.
Meanwhile, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chose to boycott the vote and staged a walkout during the proceedings.
Political observers believe that the outcome of the floor test significantly strengthens the TVK-led government’s position in Tamil Nadu politics, while marking a setback for opposition parties in the state.
