The first sitting of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly commenced on Thursday in a smooth and orderly manner, marking the beginning of a new legislative term under the government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar delivered the customary inaugural address, setting the tone for the Assembly’s upcoming proceedings.
The session was convened after the newly elected government secured the confidence of the House. Proceedings remained peaceful throughout the day, reflecting a stable start to the Assembly’s work.
The House assembled at 10 a.m., with proceedings beginning with the rendition of Tamil Thaai Vazhthu, the State song of Tamil Nadu. The National Anthem followed immediately afterwards.
The sequence marked a departure from the Assembly’s traditional practice, under which the National Anthem is generally played only after the Governor’s address. This time, however, it was performed both at the beginning of the session and again after the conclusion of the Governor’s speech.
Political observers noted that the change carries significance in light of past debates regarding the protocol surrounding the National Anthem during Assembly sessions.
Governor Arlekar began his speech in English at 10:02 a.m. He opened his address by recalling a well-known statement by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravidian leader C.N. Annadurai, emphasising that the people are the true custodians of the nation.
The address was structured around 57 key points and outlined the new government’s priorities, policy direction, and developmental agenda for the state.
During his speech, the Governor highlighted principles of social justice and democratic governance. He also referred to the ideals championed by Dr B.R. Ambedkar, emphasising that democracy is rooted in the combined values of equality, liberty, and fraternity.
The address reflected the government’s broader vision for inclusive development and effective administration in the years ahead.
Governor Arlekar’s speech lasted approximately 37 minutes and concluded at 10:39 a.m., formally launching the Assembly’s first session.
According to legislative sources, the House is scheduled to function for three days, during which members are expected to deliberate on a range of administrative, policy, and legislative matters.
The session is being viewed as an important milestone for the new government, with discussions and decisions taken during the proceedings likely to shape Tamil Nadu’s political and governance agenda in the coming months.
