High-level negotiations between the United States and Iran in Switzerland concluded on Monday, with mediating nations Qatar and Pakistan confirming that both sides have agreed to a roadmap aimed at reaching a final agreement within the next 60 days.
The talks were held amid heightened regional tensions, including disputes over the Strait of Hormuz, ongoing instability in Lebanon, and strong warnings issued by U.S. President Donald Trump in the lead-up to the discussions.
According to a joint statement from the mediators, the diplomatic process has not fully ended. Instead, technical-level discussions will continue for the rest of the week at the Bürgenstock resort in Switzerland, which is reportedly under Qatari ownership.
The statement described the ongoing process as an important step toward extending a temporary ceasefire and moving toward a more stable and comprehensive agreement.
Both sides reportedly agreed on a framework to help de-escalate the ongoing conflict in Lebanon. In addition, they established a communication mechanism intended to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor.
The waterway is considered crucial for international oil and gas shipments, and recent tensions have raised concerns in global energy markets.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on social media that the discussions included agreements on several economic measures. These reportedly include waivers on oil and petrochemical exports, the release of certain frozen financial assets, and the initiation of reconstruction and development plans for Iran.
The White House has not yet issued an official statement regarding the conclusion of the talks.
Ahead of the negotiations, U.S. President Donald Trump issued strong warnings to Iran, cautioning against any attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz again. He reportedly warned of severe consequences if such actions were repeated.
Reports also suggested that Trump considered more aggressive measures, including potential U.S. control over the strategic waterway and the imposition of transit fees.
Sources indicated that discussions between U.S. and Iranian delegations were at times highly tense. However, mediation by Qatar and Pakistan helped maintain communication throughout the process.
Some reports claimed that the Iranian delegation briefly walked out of the negotiation room during heightened tensions, but dialogue continued indirectly through mediated messaging channels.
Analysts suggest that the coming 60 days will be decisive in determining whether the fragile understanding reached in Switzerland evolves into a lasting peace agreement or collapses under ongoing geopolitical pressure.
