The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) marked a major milestone on Wednesday by successfully launching the BlueBird Block-2 communications satellite using its powerful LVM3-M6 launch vehicle. The mission was carried out on December 24, 2025, from the second launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
The rocket lifted off at 8:55 a.m. and, within nearly 15 minutes, accurately deployed the satellite into its designated low Earth orbit. With this mission, ISRO achieved two significant records: the deployment of the largest commercial communications satellite ever placed in low Earth orbit and the launch of the heaviest payload, weighing 6,100 kg, ever carried by the LVM3 rocket from Indian soil.
ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan officially confirmed the success of the mission and congratulated the scientific and technical teams involved in the launch.
The BlueBird Block-2 satellite has been developed by the US-based company AST SpaceMobile. It is part of a next-generation satellite program aimed at delivering space-based cellular broadband connectivity directly to standard mobile smartphones, without the need for specialised devices.
According to ISRO, the satellite is a key component of a global low Earth orbit constellation designed to provide uninterrupted direct-to-mobile connectivity across the world. The system will support 4G and 5G voice calls, video calls, messaging, streaming services, and high-speed data access anytime and anywhere. Equipped with a massive 223 square-metre phased-array antenna, BlueBird Block-2 stands out as the largest commercial communications satellite ever deployed in LEO.
This mission marked the sixth operational flight of the LVM3 launch vehicle and its third dedicated commercial mission. In earlier missions, LVM3 has successfully launched major national and commercial payloads, including Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3, and two OneWeb missions that collectively carried 72 satellites. The rocket’s previous mission, LVM3-M5/CMS-03, was completed on November 2, 2025.
With this successful launch, India has further strengthened its position in the global space and commercial satellite launch market, showcasing its growing technological capabilities and reliability on the international stage.
