The tragic death of an Indian student in Canada has left his family in deep shock and grief. The victim, identified as Gurkirat Singh Manocha from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, was allegedly assaulted by a group of 10-12 people before being run over by a vehicle.

Gurkirat had moved to Canada in early 2024 to pursue higher education in Fort St. John, located in British Columbia. He was enrolled in a postgraduate diploma program in Business Management at Northern Lights College. According to his family, he intended to return to India after completing his studies and contribute to his father’s food supply business.

The incident reportedly took place on the night of March 14. Gurkirat was allegedly attacked by a group of people, who first assaulted him and later ran him over with a vehicle. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have arrested all suspects involved in the case. However, officials are awaiting the postmortem report, which will confirm the exact cause of death and play a crucial role in further legal proceedings.

Gurkirat had spoken to his father, Gurpreet Singh, just a day before the incident. His father described it as a normal conversation and said that Gurkirat was close to completing his course and was planning to return home soon. He added that his son had gone abroad with big aspirations.

Alongside his studies, Gurkirat was working part-time at a Walmart store in Fort St. John. According to family members, on the day of the incident, he had gone out with some acquaintances after work, during which a dispute reportedly escalated into violence.

Gurkirat’s elder brother stated that the incident may have stemmed from a disagreement that turned into a violent confrontation. Authorities are still investigating the matter, and more details are expected to emerge.

Meanwhile, the family in Ujjain is waiting for the completion of formalities to bring his body back to India. The process involves several legal and administrative procedures, which may take time.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has assured support to the bereaved family. They expect the postmortem to be completed by March 20, after which further steps for repatriation will proceed.

The family is hoping to bring their son back home soon to perform his last rites, as they cope with an irreparable loss.
