A fresh diplomatic row has emerged between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and US President Donald Trump after the American leader reportedly claimed that Meloni had been eager to pose for a photograph with him during the recent G7 Summit.

Meloni strongly dismissed the allegation, describing the remarks as entirely false and detached from reality. The Italian Prime Minister said she was surprised by the comments and questioned why Trump continues to make such statements about leaders of allied nations.

The dispute began after Trump, speaking in an interview with an Italian television outlet, suggested that Meloni had been particularly keen to take a picture with him at the G7 gathering. He reportedly implied that he agreed to the photo and conversation out of courtesy rather than necessity.

The comments quickly drew criticism in Italy, where many political observers viewed them as disrespectful toward the leader of a long-standing US ally.

Responding to the controversy, Meloni rejected Trump’s version of events and said she found the remarks both surprising and disappointing. She argued that the US President has repeatedly displayed a confrontational attitude toward friendly nations while often appearing more accommodating toward geopolitical rivals.

According to Meloni, Western allies deserve the same level of respect and commitment that democratic nations expect from one another. She emphasised that neither she nor Italy has ever sought favour or recognition by pleading with foreign leaders.

Her response was widely seen as one of the strongest public rebukes she has delivered against Trump in recent years.

The controversy escalated further when Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the cancellation of a planned trip to the United States.

Tajani stated that the comments directed at Meloni were offensive not only to the Prime Minister but also to Italy as a nation. His decision highlighted the growing frustration within the Italian government over Trump’s remarks.

The exchange comes at a time when relations between the two leaders had appeared to be improving. During the G7 Summit in France, Meloni and Trump were seen engaged in lengthy discussions, fuelling speculation that previous disagreements were being set aside.

However, Trump’s latest comments have once again placed the relationship under scrutiny and raised questions about the future tone of cooperation between Rome and Washington.

Political analysts believe that public disputes between prominent Western leaders can have consequences beyond personal disagreements. Such exchanges may affect diplomatic trust and complicate efforts to maintain unity on major international issues.

At a time when Europe and the United States are facing a range of geopolitical and economic challenges, the war of words between Trump and Meloni has added a new dimension to debates over leadership, alliances, and diplomatic conduct.
