Football icon Lionel Messi on Saturday virtually unveiled a towering 70-foot statue dedicated to him in Kolkata’s Lake Town area, marking a historic moment for football lovers in India. The massive installation, created by the Sree Bhumi Sporting Club, drew thousands of enthusiastic fans who gathered to witness the occasion and celebrate their football hero.
Installed at South Dum Dum in Lake Town, the iron statue portrays the Argentine legend holding the FIFA World Cup trophy, symbolising his remarkable career and global legacy. While Messi could not be physically present at the venue, his virtual participation in the unveiling added to the excitement and emotional connection of the event.
World’s Tallest Messi Statue Built in Record Time
Sree Bhumi Sporting Club President and West Bengal Minister Sujit Bose revealed that the statue was completed in just 40 days. He stated that this is the tallest statue of Lionel Messi anywhere in the world, standing at an impressive height of 70 feet.
Speaking to the media, Bose said that Messi and his management team were consulted before the project was finalised.
“Messi personally approved the statue, and both he and his team are extremely pleased with how it has turned out,” he said.

Lionel Messi arrived in Kolkata early Saturday morning as part of his GOAT Tour India 2025, receiving a warm and overwhelming welcome from fans. Large crowds were seen across key parts of the city, with supporters eagerly hoping to catch a glimpse of the global football superstar. The scenes reflected Messi’s immense popularity in West Bengal, a region known for its deep-rooted passion for football.
A Special Return After 14 Years
