The opening Test at Eden Gardens wrapped up dramatically on Day 3, with South Africa clinching a 30-run victory to take a 1–0 lead in the two-match series. Chasing a modest 124, India collapsed to 93/9, effectively one batter short, as Shubman Gill did not come out to bat due to injury.
Jansen’s Early Strikes Sink India’s Top Order
India’s chase unravelled from the very first over. Marco Jansen delivered a fiery opening spell, removing Yashasvi Jaiswal (0) and KL Rahul (1) in quick succession.
Post Lunch, Dhruv Jurel and Washington Sundar attempted to steady the innings, but Jurel (13) was dismissed by Simon Harmer, who soon sent Rishabh Pant back for just two runs after a visibly uncomfortable stay at the crease.
Ravindra Jadeja (18) tried to support Sundar, but Harmer accounted for him as well. The last major resistance ended when Aiden Markram dismissed Sundar for a fighting 31 off 92, leaving India with no real chance.
Harmer finished with four wickets, while Keshav Maharaj wrapped up the innings by removing Axar Patel and Mohammed Siraj.
Bavuma Stands Tall in South Africa’s Second Innings
Earlier in the day, South Africa was bowled out for 153 in their second innings. Temba Bavuma held firm with a crucial 55*, standing out as the only batter to adapt to the volatile surface.
With India needing just 124, the advantage seemed within reach, but Indian batters failed to capitalise.

Unpredictable Eden Gardens Pitch Creates Low-Scoring Thriller
The Kolkata surface behaved erratically throughout the match, offering inconsistent bounce for pacers and sharp turn for spinners.
At one stage on Day 2, South Africa were 93/7, setting up a golden opportunity for India to take control, but the hosts let it slip.
In India’s first innings, Rahul top-scored with 39, but Harmer had already left a major impact with his early breakthroughs. After stumps on Day 2, Axar Patel had described the conditions as mentally demanding, noting:
“You can’t survive here with a defensive mindset. There’s always something happening for the bowlers.”
India Trail the Series 0–1, Second Test Becomes Must-Win
With this defeat, India now falls behind 0–1 in the series, placing significant pressure on the side ahead of the decisive second Test. A loss there would hand the series to the Proteas.
