Trump Signals Possible U.S. Move on Kharg Island, Tensions with Iran Escalate

Amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington is considering the possibility of taking control of Iran’s key oil hub, Kharg Island. The statement has raised fresh concerns about a potential escalation in the region.

In a recent interview, Trump said the U.S. has multiple strategic options on the table, including the seizure of Kharg Island. He emphasised that any decision would depend on evolving circumstances but noted that such a move could require a sustained American military presence on the island. Trump also claimed that Iran’s defensive capabilities on Kharg Island are weak, suggesting that U.S. forces could capture it with relative ease.

Previously, the U.S. had conducted airstrikes targeting what it described as military installations on the island. In response, Iran has issued strong warnings, stating that any deployment of U.S. ground troops on its territory would trigger retaliatory actions, including possible ground offensives in Gulf Arab nations and further attacks.

Trump also revealed that Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, had approved the passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, Iran initially allowed 10 Pakistan-flagged tankers and has now permitted 20 vessels, which are currently navigating through the strategic waterway.

Describing the move as a “gesture,” Trump credited Qalibaf as a key figure behind the decision and suggested that it has helped advance ongoing negotiations between the two countries. He expressed confidence that the talks are progressing in a positive direction.

Despite this, Qalibaf has maintained a tough public stance against the United States, using social media to criticise Washington and issue warnings. However, following the deaths of several senior Iranian leaders, his influence within the country’s political structure appears to be growing.

With both diplomatic efforts and military threats unfolding simultaneously, the situation between the U.S. and Iran remains volatile, drawing close attention from the international community.
