The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued a notice to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay, asking him to appear for questioning in connection with the Karur stampede case in Tamil Nadu. Officials stated that the summons is part of the agency’s ongoing investigation into the tragic incident.

Earlier, the CBI had questioned several office bearers of the TVK as part of the investigation. According to sources familiar with the matter, Vijay’s statement is considered crucial, and the agency may decide to file a chargesheet after recording his testimony.

The case was initially being investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) but was later transferred to the CBI following directions from the Supreme Court. Since taking over the probe, the central agency has been collecting evidence related to the stampede that occurred during a political meeting addressed by Vijay on September 27.

The incident took place on September 27, 2025, during a “people’s rally” organised by the TVK in Karur district. The event was held near Velusamypuram along the Karur-Erode Highway. Chaos broke out as the crowd attempted to exit the venue after Vijay’s speech, leading to a deadly stampede. A total of 41 people lost their lives, including 18 women and 10 children. The victims belonged to Karur, Erode, Dindigul, Tiruppur and Salem districts.

Earlier, the Supreme Court, citing the seriousness of the incident, had constituted a three-member supervisory committee to oversee the investigation. The panel is headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi. The court observed that the tragedy had implications for citizens’ fundamental rights and had deeply shaken the nation’s conscience, underlining the need for a fair and impartial investigation.

With the CBI now summoning Vijay, the case has once again drawn significant political and legal attention.
