Tensions in West Asia have escalated further after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) asserted that it has established complete control over the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit corridors.
According to Iranian officials, the narrow waterway, considered a lifeline for global oil and gas supplies, is now entirely under the supervision of Iran’s naval forces. Mohammad Akbarzadeh, a naval commander with the IRGC, said in a statement carried by Fars News Agency that Iran’s navy maintains full operational authority over the passage.
He cautioned that any vessel attempting to transit through the strait could face potential risks, including missile strikes or unintended drone-related damage, amid heightened military activity in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz handles a substantial share of daily global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, connecting producers in the Gulf to markets across Asia, Europe, and North America. Any disruption in this maritime chokepoint could significantly impact international energy prices and trade flows.
Meanwhile, the United States has responded firmly to the developments. US President Donald Trump stated that the US Navy stands ready to safeguard oil tankers navigating the route. He indicated that American naval forces could provide escorts if necessary to ensure uninterrupted commercial shipping operations.
Analysts warn that further escalation in the Gulf region may trigger volatility in global energy markets and strain international trade networks. For now, global attention remains fixed on the Strait of Hormuz as geopolitical tensions continue to unfold.
