Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has taken a firm stance following the killing of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, declaring that retaliation is both a “legitimate right and an obligation” of the Islamic Republic.
In a statement broadcast on state television on Sunday (March 1, 2026), President Pezeshkian accused the United States and Israel of carrying out the strikes that led to Khamenei’s death. He described the incident as an “open declaration of war against Muslims worldwide,” with particular implications for the global Shia community.
According to the President, the assassination of Iran’s highest political authority and a central religious figure for Shia Muslims cannot be dismissed as an isolated military action. He emphasised that the killing is being viewed in Tehran as a direct act of aggression targeting not only Iran but also Shia Muslims across the globe.
Pezeshkian stated that the development has deeply affected the Muslim world and warned that such an act would carry serious consequences.
The Iranian President made it clear that those responsible for planning and executing the attack would face repercussions. He asserted that responding to what he termed a “historic crime” is both the right and the responsibility of the Islamic Republic.

While he did not disclose specific details about the nature or timing of any response, he indicated that Iran’s security institutions and armed forces are actively assessing the situation and preparing appropriate measures.
Khamenei’s death has already intensified tensions across the Middle East, with fears growing of a broader regional confrontation. The international community is closely watching developments, concerned that the situation could escalate further in the coming days.
As diplomatic and military signals continue to emerge, global attention remains fixed on Tehran and Washington amid uncertainty over the next phase of this unfolding crisis.
