The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the launch of the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 12 states and union territories. The move follows the successful completion of the first phase of the exercise in Bihar.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi on Monday, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said, “We are now set to begin the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision across 12 states and union territories. The aim is to make the voter list more accurate, transparent, and updated.”
Kumar lauded the efforts of voters in Bihar, noting that over 7.5 crore citizens actively participated in the first phase of the SIR. “I extend my gratitude to the voters of Bihar and salute their enthusiasm for strengthening the democratic process,” he added.
The announcement comes at a crucial time, with several major Assembly elections scheduled in the coming months in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry. The revision drive is expected to play a key role in ensuring smooth electoral preparations and improving the accuracy of voter records in these states.
The Chief Election Commissioner further informed that after completing the Bihar SIR, the Commission held discussions with State Election Commissioners from all 36 states and union territories to refine the strategy for the upcoming phase and enhance its effectiveness.
The Election Commission’s new phase of the SIR campaign is seen as an important step toward ensuring a clean, transparent, and updated electoral roll across the nation, a move that reinforces the ECI’s commitment to fair and credible elections.
