The Indian television and film fraternity mourns the loss of veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, best known for his unforgettable portrayal of Karna in B.R. Chopra’s legendary series Mahabharat. The 68-year-old actor passed away today in Mumbai after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Known for his commanding screen presence and deep baritone, Dheer had been struggling with health complications for several months. According to the Cine and TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA), his funeral will be held today at 4:30 PM near Pawan Hans, Vile Parle (West), Mumbai. Dheer was not only a respected artist but also served as a former Chairman and General Secretary of CINTAA.

A Role That Became His Identity

In a past interview, Pankaj Dheer had once said that the role of Karna was no longer just a character; it had become a part of his identity. He shared that even school textbooks often used his image to depict Karna, and temples dedicated to his portrayal had been built in parts of the country. “People don’t just remember me, they revere me as Karna,” he had said with humility and pride.

Over the years, he received multiple offers to act in newer versions of the Mahabharat, but Dheer respectfully declined. He believed reprising any role in the same mythological world might confuse fans and dilute the sanctity of the character he had already immortalised.

Beyond the Bow and Arrow

While Mahabharat was undoubtedly his career-defining work, Pankaj Dheer’s artistic contributions stretched far beyond mythological television. He appeared in several mainstream Bollywood films, including Baadshah, Zameen, and Tumko Na Bhool Payenge. On television, he continued to captivate audiences in popular serials like Sasural Simar Ka and Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat.

His performances were known for their depth, discipline, and a quiet dignity, qualities that left a lasting impact on viewers and co-stars alike.

Legacy Lives On

Pankaj Dheer is survived by his wife and son, Nikitin Dheer, who has followed in his father’s footsteps with a successful film career. Nikitin is known for roles in Chennai Express, Jodhaa Akbar, and Sooryavanshi. His wife, Kratika Sengar, is also a celebrated name in Indian television.

The passing of Pankaj Dheer marks the end of an era, a time when mythological storytelling on Indian television touched divine heights, and actors like him gave flesh and soul to legends. His portrayal of Karna wasn’t just a performance; it became a cultural milestone.

As the industry and fans come to terms with this loss, one thing is certain: Pankaj Dheer may have left this world, but Karna, as portrayed by him, will live on forever.
