Political tensions in Maharashtra have intensified after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut formally urged Mumbai Police to take action against newly inducted Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Dina Patil over alleged threatening remarks directed at political protesters.
In a letter addressed to the Mumbai Police Commissioner, Raut claimed that Patil made statements suggesting harsh action against individuals protesting his political switch, including alleged references to violence. The controversy has sparked a fresh political confrontation between rival factions of the Shiv Sena.
According to Raut, any public representative making statements involving threats or references to explosive attacks should be subjected to a detailed investigation. He urged authorities to examine the matter seriously and, if required, involve specialised agencies to determine the facts.
The Rajya Sabha MP argued that citizens have a constitutional right to question elected representatives and hold protests in a democratic system. He said public anger has been visible in several parts of Maharashtra following the recent political developments involving legislators changing party allegiance.
The dispute comes shortly after several Members of Parliament from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction joined the rival camp headed by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The defections triggered strong reactions from party workers and supporters, leading to sharp exchanges between leaders from both sides.
Raut alleged that Patil’s comments amounted to intimidation and called for legal scrutiny of the statements. He maintained that any remarks encouraging violence should be investigated under applicable laws.
Responding to the controversy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the government would not permit anyone to create fear or issue threats in the state.
Speaking to reporters, Fadnavis emphasised that no individual should feel intimidated by such statements and assured that law enforcement agencies would take appropriate action wherever necessary. He added that maintaining public order and protecting citizens remain the government’s responsibility.
State officials indicated that the matter would be examined based on available facts and evidence. Authorities have stated that any action will be taken strictly in accordance with the law after a proper review of the allegations.
The episode has added another layer to the ongoing political rivalry in Maharashtra, with both camps continuing to exchange accusations following recent shifts in the state’s political landscape. As the controversy unfolds, attention is now focused on the findings of the police and any subsequent legal proceedings.
