Madhya Pradesh Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya have triggered a political controversy after making remarks linking criticism of elected representatives with access to public infrastructure and welfare schemes.

The comments were made during a public event in Indore, where the minister was inaugurating development works worth approximately ₹2.4 crore in his constituency, including road construction and drainage projects.

Addressing the gathering on Sunday, Vijayvargiya referred to comments allegedly made by some individuals who described elected representatives as “Kafirs.” Responding to this, he said that those who hold such views should reconsider using roads built by such representatives or benefiting from government welfare schemes.

He added that if people reject elected leaders in such terms, they should also reflect on whether they should use public infrastructure developed under their leadership.

The minister also referred to Madhya Pradesh’s flagship women-centric welfare programmes, including the Ladli Behna and Ladli Laxmi schemes. He suggested that those who do not accept the government or its representatives should similarly refrain from availing themselves of benefits under such schemes.

Amid the backlash, Vijayvargiya also reiterated that the state government does not discriminate against any community. He cited the central governance slogan “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas,” stating that it remains the guiding principle of both state and central administrations.

He further added that public service continues regardless of electoral support, emphasising that governance responsibilities extend to all citizens.

The remarks have intensified political debate in the state, with critics calling the statement controversial while supporters argue it reflects frustration over perceived disrespect toward elected representatives. The issue is expected to continue drawing political attention in the coming days.
