As conversations around artificial intelligence and digital governance dominated Web Summit Qatar 2026, an emerging social media platform, UpScrolled, captured significant attention for its challenge to established Big Tech players.
Launched last year, UpScrolled has already crossed millions of downloads globally and is currently ranked among the top apps in several countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, reflecting rapid international adoption.
Addressing attendees during the summit’s opening session, UpScrolled founder Issam Hijazi said the platform represents a shift toward a more ethical form of social media, one that places user well-being ahead of commercial interests.
Hijazi criticised major technology companies, stating that profit-driven models have led to the exploitation of user data, addictive design practices, and neglect of mental health concerns. According to him, such platforms prioritise engagement metrics over people.
UpScrolled offers familiar features such as photo, video, and text sharing, content browsing, and direct messaging, similar to platforms like Instagram and X. However, Hijazi emphasised that the platform differs fundamentally in how it approaches content delivery.
He explained that most social media platforms treat users as commodities, using algorithms to encourage endless scrolling for revenue generation. In contrast, UpScrolled has been designed to promote mindful usage, allowing users to disengage without algorithmic pressure.
The company positions itself as an algorithm-light, expression-friendly platform, claiming it avoids shadow-banning and does not artificially amplify or suppress content. This approach comes amid growing global concerns over transparency and content control on digital platforms.
Hijazi also noted that algorithms themselves are not inherently problematic, arguing that their impact depends on how they are trained and deployed. He said selective content promotion often reflects the priorities and agendas of those controlling the technology.
Following recent developments surrounding TikTok’s U.S. ownership deal, where tighter controls were introduced over data and algorithms in the name of national security, questions around digital freedom and user autonomy have intensified. In this environment, platforms like UpScrolled are gaining traction among users seeking alternatives.
According to Hijazi, the platform has also attracted interest from investors who share its ethical outlook and long-term vision. He said many individuals and groups are keen to support technology initiatives focused on responsible innovation.
UpScrolled was created in response to widespread dissatisfaction with existing social media platforms. The company now aims to maintain its rapid growth while positioning itself as a people-first digital platform.
