In a landmark victory, Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the new mayor of New York City, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a closely watched race. The 34-year-old Democratic Socialist’s win marks a defining moment in the city’s political history, making him the first Muslim, the first South Asian, and the first African-born individual ever to lead America’s largest city.
A Campaign Built on Affordability and Justice

Andrew Cuomo, representing the centrist and corporate-backed faction, criticised Mamdani’s democratic socialist stance as “far-left extremism.” After losing to Mamdani in the June Democratic primary, Cuomo ran as an independent, calling the race a “civil war within the Democratic Party.”
“This is a clash between traditional moderates and a new left-wing movement trying to redefine the party’s future,” Cuomo said on Election Day.
Mamdani’s victory, however, suggests that voters across the city may be ready for that redefinition, one that prioritises social equity and grassroots reform over entrenched political power.
