Russia-Ukraine War: Kyiv Confirms Loss of Strategic Town of Siversk Amid Escalation

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to intensify, with Ukrainian military authorities confirming the withdrawal from the strategically important eastern town of Siversk. The decision, announced late Tuesday, came after sustained pressure and heavy assaults by Russian forces in the region, which has remained a major flashpoint in the ongoing war.

Ukrainian officials have accused Moscow of stepping up attacks ahead of the Christmas period, particularly targeting the country’s energy infrastructure. These strikes, according to Kyiv, are aimed at disrupting civilian life and increasing pressure during the winter months.

Meanwhile, a deadly explosion has been reported in Russia’s capital. According to Russian investigative agencies, an overnight blast in southern Moscow killed three people, including two police officers. The incident occurred close to the site where a Russian military general was assassinated earlier this week, prompting heightened security measures and an intensified investigation.

In another development, Russia claimed that Ukraine carried out a drone attack in the Tula region. Governor Dmitry Milyaev stated that Russian air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 12 Ukrainian drones over the area. However, debris from one downed drone reportedly triggered a fire at an industrial facility. Authorities did not disclose details about the affected site.

Separately, two North Korean prisoners of war currently held by Ukraine have expressed a desire to start a new life in South Korea. According to media reports, the soldiers conveyed their intentions in a letter sent to a Seoul-based human rights organisation. The two men were captured by Ukrainian forces in January after being injured during combat.

In their message, the prisoners reportedly wrote that support from the South Korean people had given them renewed hope and aspirations for the future.

It is worth noting that South Korean and Western intelligence agencies have previously stated that North Korea has deployed thousands of troops in support of Russia’s military operations in Ukraine, further widening the scope of the conflict.
