Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has found himself at the centre of a political and social controversy after remarks made during a public event sparked accusations of reinforcing gender stereotypes. His comments on preserving traditional cooking practices have triggered debate across political circles and social media.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Pampa Literature Festival in Chengannur on July 25, 2026, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of preserving Kerala’s traditional art, culture, and culinary heritage for future generations.
He noted that earlier generations regularly passed down their customs and family traditions, but said this practice is gradually fading. Referring to family recipes, Satheesan remarked that many mothers do not share their unique cooking methods with the next generation and suggested that these recipes should be taught to children or daughters-in-law to ensure they are preserved.
The remarks drew criticism from CPI(M) leader and former General Education Minister V. Sivankutty, who argued that the statement sends the wrong message at a time when schools promote the idea that household responsibilities should be shared equally, regardless of gender.
According to Sivankutty, modern education encourages equal participation in domestic work, making it inappropriate to associate cooking responsibilities primarily with women.
Author S. Saradakutty also objected to the Chief Minister’s comments, saying they reflect outdated views on gender roles. In a social media post, she argued that society has evolved significantly and public leaders should express views that align with changing social values.
The Chief Minister’s statement has since sparked widespread discussion online and among political observers. While some believe his remarks were intended solely to encourage the preservation of traditional culinary heritage, others contend that referring specifically to daughters-in-law reinforces conventional expectations that domestic responsibilities belong primarily to women.
The controversy continues to fuel discussions on the balance between preserving cultural traditions and promoting gender equality in contemporary society.
