A deeply unsettling incident from a rural part of Odisha has brought attention to the harsh realities of poverty and bureaucratic challenges faced by marginalised communities. A man reportedly carried his deceased sister’s skeletal remains to a bank in an attempt to access her savings of just ₹19,300.
According to reports, the man, identified as Jitu Munda, lost his sister Kalra Munda nearly two months ago. Before her passing, she had informed him about the money in her bank account and asked him to withdraw it if needed. Acting on her request, Jitu approached a local rural bank, hoping to claim the amount.
However, bank officials denied the request due to the absence of necessary documentation. He was asked to produce either the account holder in person or submit valid documents such as a death certificate and proof establishing him as the legal heir. For someone living in extreme poverty, arranging these documents proved to be a major obstacle.
Faced with these challenges, Jitu took a drastic and shocking step. He reportedly exhumed his sister’s remains, placed them in a sack, and carried them on his shoulder for many kilometres to the bank, hoping this would serve as proof.
The incident left onlookers stunned as he walked through the village carrying the remains. Beyond its shock value, the episode highlights the severe difficulties faced by economically weaker sections in accessing even small financial resources.
The case raises important concerns about administrative barriers, lack of accessibility, and limited awareness at the grassroots level. While India continues to be recognised for its economic growth, such incidents reveal a contrasting reality, where basic survival and access to personal funds can still demand extreme measures.
