China’s senior diplomat Wang Yi has strongly criticised the ongoing conflict in West Asia, saying the war could have been avoided and urging the United States to handle its disagreements with Beijing more responsibly.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday (March 8, 2026) in Beijing, Wang Yi said the conflict in the region should never have occurred. He stressed that the use of force does not justify actions, warning that the international community must not return to what he described as the “law of the jungle.”
The remarks were made during China’s annual political gathering known as the Two Sessions. The event brings together the country’s national legislature and its top political advisory body, and it is closely watched for signals about China’s domestic priorities and foreign policy direction.
Wang Yi noted that the current year is particularly significant for relations between China and the United States. He emphasised the need for both sides to make serious efforts to reduce tensions and manage their differences carefully.
Relations between the two countries have remained strained since U.S. President Donald Trump returned to the White House last year. The situation worsened after trade disputes escalated, with both nations imposing retaliatory tariffs on each other’s goods.
China has also previously criticised the military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran. Beijing strongly condemned the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, describing it as a development that could threaten stability in the region.
During the briefing, Wang Yi said China and the United States must take careful steps to stabilise their relationship. He suggested that both nations should work to manage disagreements and remove unnecessary obstacles in order to create a more constructive environment for cooperation.
He also commented on Beijing’s ties with Russia, which have been criticised by Western countries over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Wang Yi stated that despite a complicated and turbulent international environment, China’s relationship with Russia remains firm and resilient.
According to him, strong cooperation between the two countries could play an important role in maintaining stability during a period of rising global tensions.
