U.S. President Donald Trump addressed a joint session of Congress on Tuesday in his latest State of the Union speech, placing strong emphasis on economic growth and job creation as the country heads toward the November midterm elections.
In his remarks, President Trump asserted that his administration’s policies have significantly boosted employment and strengthened domestic manufacturing. He described the current phase as a “historic turnaround,” claiming that American industries are regaining momentum under his leadership.
Republican lawmakers welcomed the President with chants of “USA! USA!” as he entered the House chamber wearing a blue suit and red tie. In contrast, most Democratic members remained seated and refrained from applauding, reflecting the sharp political divide in Congress.
During his address, President Trump urged voters to back Republican candidates in the upcoming midterms to ensure continued economic progress. He argued that sustained policy consistency is key to maintaining growth and expanding job opportunities across the country.
In a notable moment of the evening, Trump announced that national ice hockey team goalkeeper Connor Hellebuyck would receive the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom. Praising the team’s achievements, the President described their success as a source of national pride.
The speech saw early disruption when Democratic Representative Al Green of Texas was escorted out of the chamber after staging a protest. Green held up a sign reading, “Black people aren’t apes,” drawing attention to a controversial social media video previously circulated online.
The video in question reportedly depicted former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama in an offensive manner. The White House later removed the clip, with President Trump stating that it had been posted by a staff member.
Approximately 30 Democratic lawmakers chose not to attend the address, instead participating in a separate event titled the “People’s State of the Union.”
Speaking outside the Capitol, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy criticised the President, saying he was undermining the integrity of the institution.
The State of the Union address comes at a time of heightened political polarisation in the United States. While Republicans highlight economic indicators as proof of policy success, Democrats continue to challenge the administration’s actions and rhetoric.
With the midterm elections approaching, the speech is widely seen as a strategic effort to solidify Republican support and shape the political narrative heading into November.
