Exit Polls Signal Majority for PM Takaichi’s Alliance in Japan’s Lower House

Exit polls released after Sunday’s crucial parliamentary election in Japan indicate a strong performance by the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. According to projections shared by public broadcaster NHK and other major television networks, the coalition is on track to secure a clear majority in the lower house of Parliament.

NHK estimates suggest that the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), under Takaichi’s leadership, along with its allies, could win more than two-thirds of the 465 seats in the House of Representatives, the more powerful chamber in Japan’s bicameral legislature.

If confirmed, the outcome would give Prime Minister Takaichi a solid mandate to push forward her conservative policy agenda. Her priorities include revitalising Japan’s economy, strengthening the country’s defence capabilities, and enhancing military preparedness amid rising regional tensions, particularly with China. She is also keen to further deepen Japan’s strategic partnership with the United States.

Sanae Takaichi assumed office in October 2025, becoming Japan’s first female prime minister. While she enjoys strong personal popularity, the LDP has faced criticism in recent years over funding issues and links to religious organisations. Against this backdrop, Takaichi called for snap elections just three months after taking office, aiming to capitalise on her public support.

Throughout the campaign, Takaichi projected an image of a hardworking and firm leader, a style that resonated especially with younger voters. Her campaign message emphasised discipline, action, and consistent effort.

Recent surveys showed the opposition struggling to mount a unified challenge. Despite the emergence of a new centrist alliance and some gains by right-wing groups, opposition parties appeared too divided to seriously threaten the ruling bloc.

Prime Minister Takaichi had earlier stated that she would step down if her party and its partners failed to secure a majority in the lower house. Current trends, however, point toward a decisive victory, reinforcing her leadership position.
