Sergio Gor, the newly appointed Ambassador of the United States to India, formally presented his letters of credence to President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. The official ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, as confirmed in a statement released by the President’s Secretariat.
At 38, Mr Gor is among the youngest US envoys to be posted to India. He assumed charge in mid-November last year after receiving confirmation from the US Senate in October 2025. President Donald Trump nominated him for the position in August 2025, at a time when Gor was serving as the White House Personnel Director.
During the ceremony, President Murmu formally accepted his credentials. According to the Rashtrapati Bhavan statement, diplomats from other nations also presented their credentials on the same occasion. These included Chandradath Singh, High Commissioner of Trinidad and Tobago, and Robert Zischg, Ambassador of Austria.
Mr Gor’s arrival in New Delhi comes at a sensitive phase in India-US relations. In recent remarks made on January 12, he signalled Washington’s intent to stabilise and strengthen bilateral ties, stating that India remains one of the most vital partners for the United States. He also noted that both countries are actively working toward concluding a comprehensive trade agreement.
Relations between New Delhi and Washington had faced strain after the Trump administration-imposed tariffs of up to 50 per cent on Indian goods, including an additional 25 per cent levy linked to India’s imports of Russian crude oil.
