A 37-year-old woman was killed after being shot by a US immigration agent in Minneapolis, triggering a sharp confrontation between local authorities and the Trump administration. While federal officials have defended the shooting as an act of self-defence, city leaders have condemned it as a reckless use of force that led to the loss of civilian life.
According to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the deceased woman, identified as Renee Nicole Good, was described as a “violent agitator” who allegedly attempted to run over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents with her vehicle. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey strongly rejected this version, saying the incident reflected irresponsible conduct by a federal agent. He accused ICE of escalating tensions in the city and publicly called on the agency to leave Minneapolis.
The shooting occurred around 10:25 a.m. on Wednesday on Portland Avenue. Videos circulating on social media show a maroon SUV stopped in the middle of a residential street, with protesters gathered nearby. ICE agents are seen approaching the vehicle and ordering the woman to step out.
As the SUV began to move forward, one of the agents opened fire. Three gunshots can be heard in the footage, after which the vehicle veered off course and collided with a parked car. The available videos do not clearly confirm whether the agent was struck by the vehicle.
President Donald Trump claimed on his social media platform Truth Social that an ICE officer had been “viciously run over” and was hospitalised. He blamed what he called the “radical left” for creating a hostile environment for law enforcement officers across the country.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara offered a more measured account, stating that the woman was blocking the roadway in her vehicle and began driving away as a federal officer approached her on foot.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem alleged that the woman had been following and obstructing officers throughout the day and attempted to “weaponise her vehicle,” calling the act one of “domestic terrorism.” She said the agent fired in self-defence and also sustained minor injuries.
The Minneapolis City Council released a statement disputing the federal narrative, saying Renee Good was caring for people in her neighbourhood and was wrongly targeted. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also criticised the DHS account, calling it misleading and assuring the public that the state would ensure a fair and transparent investigation.
The shooting sparked widespread protests across Minneapolis, with demonstrators demanding that ICE withdraw from the city. The incident occurred roughly one mile from the site where George Floyd was killed in 2020, an event that ignited global protests against racial injustice.
Several senior Democratic leaders, including former Vice President Kamala Harris and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, accused the administration of misrepresenting the facts and attempting to deflect accountability.
Citing safety concerns, Minneapolis Public Schools announced the cancellation of classes for the remainder of the week. Reports also indicated that federal agents carried out arrests outside a local high school on the same day. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been tasked with probing the shooting.
The incident comes amid a large-scale ICE deployment in Minneapolis, part of a broader federal immigration enforcement drive that has drawn criticism from local leaders and civil rights groups. As investigations continue, the case has further intensified the national debate over immigration enforcement and the use of force by federal agencies.
