Tensions have resurfaced between Thailand and Cambodia after the Thai military accused its neighbour of breaching a recently agreed ceasefire aimed at ending weeks of violent border clashes. The truce had brought temporary relief after unrest forced hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee their homes.
In an official statement, the Thai Army claimed that more than 250 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were detected crossing from the Cambodian side late on Sunday night. According to Thai officials, such activity goes against both the spirit and the agreed conditions of the ceasefire.
The ceasefire came into effect on Saturday at noon local time. Under the agreement, both nations committed to freezing troop positions along the border, halting any military reinforcements, and facilitating the safe return of civilians displaced by the conflict. The deal was widely seen as a diplomatic breakthrough, supported by mediation efforts from China and the United States.
On Monday, the Royal Thai Army said the alleged actions by Cambodia amount to provocation and undermine attempts to de-escalate tensions. It also warned that Thailand may reconsider the planned release of 18 Cambodian soldiers who have been in Thai custody since July if the situation does not improve.
The Thai military further cautioned that continued violations of agreements and national sovereignty would leave the country with no option but to respond appropriately. As of now, Cambodian authorities have not issued an official response to the allegations.

The accusations surfaced just hours after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi described the ceasefire as a “hard-earned achievement,” while US President Donald Trump praised the agreement as a “swift and fair resolution.”
The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has a long history, stretching back more than a century. Tensions flared again earlier this year after a group of Cambodian women sang patriotic songs at a contested temple site. The situation worsened in May when a Cambodian soldier was killed during a confrontation, pushing bilateral relations to their lowest point in over a decade.
Intense fighting along the border lasted for five days, resulting in the deaths of several soldiers and civilians and displacing thousands of residents. Although a fragile truce was first reached in July and formally signed in October, it collapsed earlier this month following renewed clashes, with both sides accusing each other of breaking the ceasefire.
