Amid escalating tensions in Southeast Asia, Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to immediately halt ongoing border clashes. The two nations announced an “immediate ceasefire” in a joint statement released on Saturday, bringing a pause to one of the most intense border conflicts the region has seen in recent years.
According to the statement, the ceasefire will take effect at noon, with both sides committing to keep their current troop positions unchanged. The agreement also rules out any additional military deployments or movement along the disputed border areas.
Cambodia’s Defence Ministry, in a message shared on social media, warned that any attempt to reinforce military presence could escalate tensions further and undermine long-term efforts to resolve the dispute peacefully.
The ceasefire agreement was formally signed by Thailand’s Defence Minister Natthaphon Nakrphanit and Cambodia’s Defence Minister Tea Seiha. The understanding has brought an end to nearly three weeks of fighting that reportedly claimed at least 101 lives and forced more than half a million people on both sides of the border to flee their homes.
The recent clashes involved fighter jet operations, rocket attacks and heavy artillery shelling, sharply worsening the humanitarian situation in border regions. The violence flared up again earlier this month after the collapse of a previous ceasefire reached in July, which had been brokered with the involvement of US President Donald Trump.
Security experts view the ceasefire as a positive and much-needed development, though they caution that achieving lasting peace will depend on sustained diplomatic engagement and confidence-building measures between the two neighbours.
