US President Donald Trump has filed a defamation lawsuit against the British public broadcaster BBC, accusing it of misleading editing in a Panorama documentary related to his speech delivered on 6 January 2021.
According to court filings submitted in Florida, Trump alleges that the BBC deliberately and maliciously altered portions of his speech, presenting his remarks in a distorted manner. The lawsuit includes claims of defamation and violation of trade practices laws, with Trump seeking damages of $5 billion on each count, totaling $10 billion.
Trump’s legal team argues that the broadcaster combined separate parts of his address to falsely suggest that he directly encouraged violence. They claim the editing created a deceptive narrative that misled viewers and caused serious harm to Trump’s reputation.
The BBC had earlier issued an apology in November, acknowledging that the way the clip was edited may have created a “mistaken impression.” However, the broadcaster rejected Trump’s demand for compensation, maintaining that there was no legal basis for a defamation claim. Following the formal filing of the lawsuit, the BBC has not yet released any fresh official response.

The controversy centers on Trump’s speech delivered shortly before the unrest at the US Capitol on 6 January 2021. During the address, Trump told supporters they would march toward the Capitol to show support for lawmakers. Much later in the same speech, he used phrases such as “we fight.”
In the Panorama programme, these remarks were edited together, making it appear as though Trump issued a direct call for violent action. Trump has strongly disputed this portrayal, stating that his words were taken out of context and altered unfairly.
Last month, Trump had publicly indicated his intention to take legal action against the BBC, alleging that the documentary misrepresented his statements and amounted to deliberate deception.
The case is now expected to intensify global debate over media responsibility, editorial ethics, and the balance between freedom of expression and accurate journalism.
