US Imposes Sanctions on Six More Ships Following Seizure of Venezuelan Oil Tanker

By: The Trek News Desk

The United States has imposed fresh sanctions on six additional ships linked to Venezuela, accusing them of carrying Venezuelan oil. This move comes just one day after US authorities seized a Venezuelan oil tanker, the “Skipper”, off the country’s coast.

New Sanctions by the United States

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed reporters, stating that the “Skipper” tanker had been involved in illegal oil shipping and would be brought to an American port. Alongside the tanker, sanctions have also been placed on several relatives of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and businesses associated with his regime.

The US action has been strongly condemned by Venezuela, which labelled it as “international maritime piracy.” Washington, on the other hand, has called Maduro’s government illegitimate, accusing Venezuela of trafficking illegal drugs into the United States.

Increased US Military Presence Amid Rising Tensions with Venezuela

Before the raid, the US Navy had already ramped up its military presence in the Caribbean Sea, which borders Venezuela. American warships and the aircraft carrier “USS Gerald Ford” were positioned in proximity to Venezuela. A dramatic video released on Wednesday showed US soldiers descending from a helicopter onto the “Skipper,” where they took control of the vessel’s deck.

Maduro’s Strong Condemnation

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro called the seizure a serious crime, claiming that “US forces kidnapped the crew and stole the ship.” He described the incident as the beginning of a “new era of maritime piracy in the Caribbean.”

In a similar vein, Venezuela’s Interior Minister, Diosdado Cabello, accused the US of being “murderers, thieves, and pirates,” claiming that such actions were typical of how the US started wars around the world.

The United States’ Justification

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasised that the US would take stringent actions against vessels involved in illegal oil trade and those supporting terrorism through black-market activities. She also made it clear that the US would continue to seize more vessels if they were found to violate US sanctions and international law.

Additionally, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bestent stated that the sanctions on Maduro’s family and close associates were aimed at curbing the “dictatorship and brutal control” in Venezuela.

Maduro Seeks Support from Russia

In a response to growing external pressure, Maduro revealed that he had received support from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who offered solidarity in the face of increasing US actions. However, US officials did not comment on Putin’s statements.

Implications of the Seizure

The latest developments signal a further escalation of tensions between the United States and Venezuela. Washington’s continued actions are being viewed as part of a broader, more aggressive strategy against Maduro’s government, with increasing pressure both domestically and internationally. The US has made it clear that it will not tolerate the flow of illegal goods and narcotics from Venezuela and will continue to target those involved in illicit activities.
