The U.S. State Department has confirmed that 85,000 visas have been cancelled since January, marking one of the most aggressive enforcement phases of President Donald Trump’s second-term immigration policy. According to officials, the sweeping actions reflect Washington’s renewed push to tighten border controls and strengthen national security protocols.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the department wrote, “85,000 visa revocations since January. President Trump and Secretary Marco Rubio remain committed to a clear mission, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon.”
The message was accompanied by an image of President Trump with the slogan “Make America Safe Again”, underscoring the administration’s belief that tougher visa rules are essential to safeguarding the country.
Security at the Centre of the New Visa Policy
A State Department official revealed that over 8,000 of the revoked visas belonged to international students, adding that offences such as DUI, theft and assault were major triggers. These violations alone accounted for nearly half of all visa cancellations recorded in 2025.
However, the official declined to provide details on the remaining revocations. Previous government statements have attributed similar actions to expired visas or allegations of “support for terrorism.”
Crackdown Extends to Controversial Activities
In October, the Trump administration cancelled visas of individuals accused of celebrating the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Officials have also increased scrutiny on foreign students who participated in protests linked to the Gaza conflict, signalling a broader monitoring approach toward political activity by visa holders.
Continuous Surveillance of 55 million Visa Holders
The State Department’s recent actions are part of a larger plan to implement a “continuous vetting” system, announced in August. Under this framework, more than 55 million foreign nationals holding valid U.S. visas will be monitored throughout their stay to detect potential security risks in real time.
Additionally, vetting procedures for H-1B visas, a program vital for U.S. companies hiring skilled foreign professionals, have become significantly stricter under the administration’s updated guidelines.
A Broader Strategy to Reshape U.S. Immigration
Taken together, the mass cancellations, heightened screening, and expanded surveillance demonstrate the administration’s determined move to overhaul visa oversight. While officials argue these measures are necessary for national security, critics fear that the aggressive approach may unfairly impact thousands who pose no real threat.
As the Trump administration advances deeper into its second term, the trajectory of U.S. immigration policy appears to be shifting toward even stricter enforcement and continuous monitoring.
