On Monday (December 8, 2025), the Supreme Court declined to grant an urgent hearing on the plea regarding the large-scale cancellations of IndiGo flights. The court stated that the government is already aware of the situation and has taken necessary steps to address it.
The bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, acknowledged the severity of the matter, noting that millions of passengers were stranded across various airports in the country.
“A Serious Issue, Government is Taking Action” – Supreme Court
During the proceedings, Chief Justice Surya Kant remarked, “This is indeed a serious matter. Millions of people are stranded at airports. We are aware that the Government of India has taken cognisance of the issue and is taking timely action. We also recognise the potential health and other concerns passengers may be facing.”
The issue was raised by a lawyer who informed the court that numerous flights operated by IndiGo had been cancelled recently, causing severe inconvenience to passengers. The lawyer also pointed out that there was a lack of timely information about cancellations, and nearly 2,500 flights had been delayed, affecting 95 airports nationwide.
250+ Flights Cancelled from Delhi and Bengaluru Airports
According to sources, over 250 IndiGo flights were cancelled on Monday from the major airports in Delhi and Bengaluru, marking the seventh consecutive day of disruption.
- Delhi Airport:
• 134 flights cancelled (75 departures, 59 arrivals) - Bengaluru Airport:
• 117 flights cancelled (65 arrivals, 62 departures)

Regulatory Changes in Pilot Duty Schedules to Blame for the Disruptions
IndiGo has attributed the widespread flight cancellations to changes in pilot duty schedules and regulatory norms that were implemented on December 2. These changes have disrupted the airline’s scheduling capabilities, leaving millions of passengers stranded at airports across the country.
Both passengers and the government have strongly criticised the airline for its handling of the situation.
Court Trusts Government’s Response, Passengers Await Resolution
Although the Supreme Court has declined to intervene immediately, it has made it clear that the situation is serious, and the government must take swift action to resolve it. The ongoing disruptions have created significant distress for passengers, and expectations are high that the government and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will act swiftly to restore normalcy to air travel operations in the country.
As the government works on addressing the issue, passengers continue to face uncertainty and frustration at the airports, with hopes resting on a prompt resolution that will bring the nation’s air travel system back to stability.
