Thailand launched air strikes on Cambodia on Monday after Cambodian troops opened fire on Thai forces along their disputed border, resulting in the death of one Thai soldier and leaving four others wounded. The military confrontation marks an alarming escalation in tensions between the two countries, with both sides accusing each other of aggression.
Thailand’s Military Statement
In a statement, Thai Army spokesperson Winthai Suvaree confirmed that Cambodian forces attacked Thai positions early Monday morning in Ubon Ratchathani province. He stated, “The Cambodian troops launched an attack using support fire weapons, resulting in the death of one soldier and injuries to four others.” In response, Thailand’s military began conducting air strikes to target Cambodian military positions in several areas, in an attempt to suppress further attacks.
“The Thai Army has initiated air strikes in multiple locations to counter the Cambodian offensive,” Winthai added.
Cambodia’s Counterclaims
On the other hand, Cambodia’s Ministry of Defence spokesperson, Maly Socheata, claimed that Thailand had launched attacks on Cambodian soldiers stationed near the border in Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey provinces. She said, “Thailand fired multiple shots from tanks at the Tamone Thom temple and near the Preah Vihear temple. However, Cambodia did not retaliate.”
Complicated Local Situation
Met Measpheakdey, a spokesman for the Oddar Meanchey provincial administration, reported gunfire near the centuries-old Tamone Thom and Ta Krabei temples. Local villagers residing near the border have been forced to flee to safety due to the ongoing violence.
Thailand’s military also alleged that Cambodian forces launched BM-21 rockets towards civilian areas in Thailand’s Buri Ram province, though there were no reported casualties.
Mass Evacuations Along the Border
The Thai Second Army Region reported that over 35,000 people have been evacuated from areas near the Cambodian border in Thailand as a precautionary measure due to the rising violence.
Previous Incidents and the Historical Context of Conflict
This new round of violence comes months after a deadly five-day conflict between the two nations in July, which claimed 43 lives and displaced around 300,000 people. A ceasefire was brokered at the time, with significant mediation from the United States, China, and Malaysia.
In the following months, Thailand suspended a trade deal with Cambodia after several soldiers were wounded in a suspected landmine blast, leading to renewed hostilities and a series of accusations from both sides. Cambodia recently reported the death of a civilian amid the skirmishes.
The Longstanding Border Dispute
The roots of this conflict lie in a century-old border dispute, dating back to the colonial era when French rule in Southeast Asia shaped the region’s territorial boundaries. Both countries claim rights to several border regions that house significant historical and religious landmarks, including the Preah Vihear and Tamone Thom temples, which have become central to the ongoing dispute.
As tensions continue to mount along the Thai-Cambodian border, the international community remains on alert, with diplomatic efforts likely to intensify in the coming weeks to prevent further escalation of violence. The border conflict highlights the complexities of historical territorial disputes in Southeast Asia, where unresolved issues from colonial times still influence present-day geopolitics.
