“Aadhaar Is Not Proof of Date of Birth”: UP Government Issues Strict Directions to All Departments

By: The Trek News Desk

The Uttar Pradesh Planning Department has issued a statewide directive instructing all government departments not to accept Aadhaar cards as proof of date of birth.
The order, dated November 24, refers to a UIDAI communication from October 31, 2025, which clearly stated that “Aadhaar is not a document establishing birth.”

According to officials, despite previous advisories, several departments continued to rely on Aadhaar for verifying a person’s date of birth, prompting the government to intervene firmly.

Planning Department Reiterates UIDAI Guidelines

The Planning Department, responsible for implementing Aadhaar-related policies in the state, said some offices were still using Aadhaar for DOB verification even though UIDAI had repeatedly clarified this was incorrect.

The order, issued by Special Secretary Amit Singh Singhal, instructs all Additional Chief Secretaries, Principal Secretaries and Secretaries to ensure that subordinate authorities immediately comply with the rule.

Valid Documents for Date of Birth Verification

Officials stated that the following documents must be used in place of Aadhaar for establishing the date of birth:

  • Birth Certificate
  • High School Marksheet
  • Other government-approved supporting documents

These requirements are particularly crucial in areas where age is a key eligibility criterion, such as government recruitment, school and college admissions, and other official verifications.

UIDAI Issues Fresh Reminder

In the latest communication from UIDAI’s Lucknow regional office, Deputy Director Aditya Prakash Bajpai reminded departments that an earlier advisory had already been issued on June 5.
However, reports indicated that many offices continued accepting Aadhaar as a DOB document, necessitating another formal reminder.

UIDAI stressed the need for original supporting documents for all date-of-birth verifications to prevent errors and misuse.

Move Will Prevent Fraud, Says Deputy CM

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya welcomed the directive, saying it would help curb fraudulent practices related to age manipulation.
He referenced past incidents and added, “Such guidelines send out a strong message and are beneficial for everyone.”
