Strong Tremors Jolt Kolkata and North Bengal After Bangladesh Earthquake

Strong tremors rippled through several parts of West Bengal on Friday evening after an earthquake struck neighbouring Bangladesh. The sudden shaking startled residents, prompting many to rush out of homes, shops, and offices in fear.

According to early media reports, a 5.6-magnitude quake was recorded roughly 13 kilometres south-southwest of Bangladesh’s Narsingdi district. Owing to its shallow depth, the tremor’s impact was clearly felt across bordering Indian regions.

Besides Kolkata, the shaking was reported from Siliguri, Malda, Cooch Behar, Nadia, and Dakshin Dinajpur, where people described the jolts as sharp and unexpected. Within moments, videos and posts surfaced on social platforms, capturing the sense of panic as buildings swayed briefly.

Local authorities said that no damage or injuries have been reported so far, but monitoring is underway to assess any delayed impact. Seismologists note that shallow earthquakes often transmit stronger vibrations to nearby areas, which could explain the intensity felt across North Bengal.

Although the tremors triggered a brief alarm, conditions returned to normal soon after. Officials have urged residents to avoid spreading rumours and to follow updates only from verified government channels.
