India Set to Receive Javelin Missiles and Excalibur Artillery Rounds

The United States has approved a potential $93 million defence deal that could soon add advanced Javelin missile systems and Excalibur artillery projectiles to India’s military inventory.
The announcement came through an official notification issued by the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).

U.S. Greenlights Javelin Missile Package

According to the DSCA, the U.S. State Department has authorised a possible sale worth $45.7 million for the Javelin anti-tank missile system.
India’s request includes:

  • 100 FGM-148 Javelin rounds
  • 1 FGM-148 “fly-to-buy” missile
  • 25 Command Launch Units (CLU)
  • Missile simulation rounds
  • Spare parts and full lifecycle support

The agency stated that the package would significantly enhance India’s ability to counter “current and future threats,” improve regional stability, and deepen the U.S.–India strategic partnership. Congress has also been formally notified of the approval.

Excalibur Artillery Rounds Also Approved

In a separate notification, the DSCA confirmed another potential sale, this time for Excalibur M982A1 precision-guided projectiles valued at $47.1 million.
The proposed sale covers:

  • 216 M982A1 Excalibur tactical projectiles
  • Ancillary equipment
  • Fire control support
  • Technical assistance from the U.S. government

The notification emphasised that the sale would not alter the military balance in the region but would strengthen India’s precision-strike capabilities, improving first-strike accuracy across frontline brigades.

Boost to India’s Battlefield Capabilities

Both Javelin missiles and Excalibur projectiles are widely regarded for their accuracy and combat effectiveness. Defence analysts believe that acquiring these systems will give India’s armed forces an edge in modern, rapidly evolving battle environments.

What Comes Next?

These approvals represent a possible sale, not a finalised contract. The next stage involves direct negotiations between the Indian government and U.S. defence manufacturers.
However, Washington’s approval signals a clear intent: the U.S. remains a committed partner in India’s ongoing defence modernisation efforts.
