The body of Ajit Roop Singh Chaudhary, a 22-year-old MBBS student from Rajasthan, was recovered this week from a dam near Ufa, approximately 1,151 km east of Moscow. Ajit had gone missing 19 days ago, and his sudden death has sparked suspicions over the circumstances.

Ajit had been pursuing his medical degree at Bashkir State Medical University since 2023. Reports indicate that he was last seen on October 19 around 11 a.m., leaving his hostel to buy milk and telling fellow students he would return within half an hour. He never returned.

His body was discovered on November 6, and both the college and India’s Ministry of External Affairs informed the family about the tragic development.

“We are still waiting for more information. We don’t know when the postmortem will be conducted or when we will receive our child’s body. His parents sold three bighas of land to send him to Russia, and now they are heartbroken,” said Ajit’s uncle, Rajendra Singh.

Identification and Family Response

Nitin Sagwan, chairman of Alwar Saras Dairy, who accompanied the family in coordinating with authorities, confirmed that the body was recovered from a dam near the White River. Indian students studying with Ajit helped identify the body.

Sagwan added that the Indian Ministry of External Affairs is working closely with the Indian Embassy in Russia and local authorities to expedite the repatriation of Ajit’s remains.

Political Reaction and Call for Investigation

Former Union Minister and Congress leader Jitendra Singh has urged the central government to take swift action to bring Ajit’s body back to India and ensure a thorough investigation.

“The news of Ajit’s death is deeply shocking. This is a time of immense grief for the Alwar family. A promising young life has been lost under suspicious circumstances,” he said.

“The Government of India and Minister of External Affairs Dr S. Jaishankar must act immediately to ensure the family does not face further difficulties. The circumstances surrounding his death demand the highest level of scrutiny.”
