This will be the first meeting between the two leaders since U.S. President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on India for its purchase of Russian oil.

According to the schedule issued on Sunday, Jaishankar and Rubio will meet at a hotel in New York on Monday morning. This meeting is taking place ahead of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The last meeting between the two leaders was in July during the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Washington, D.C. The main objective of this new meeting is to advance discussions on the India-U.S. trade agreement. Both countries will engage in talks aimed at completing a new trade agreement to strengthen bilateral economic relations.

Along with this meeting, high-level delegations from both India and the U.S. will also discuss the trade agreement. Led by India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, the Indian delegation will meet with the U.S. side in New York on Monday. According to the Ministry of Commerce, this meeting could be a significant step towards achieving a “mutually beneficial” trade agreement between India and the U.S.

The Ministry also mentioned that during the visit of a delegation from the U.S. Trade Representative’s office to India on September 16, positive discussions were held, and it was decided to accelerate efforts to complete the trade agreement soon.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Jaishankar, who arrived in New York on September 21, held a bilateral meeting with the Philippines’ Foreign Minister Teresa P. Lazaro. The two leaders discussed the recent successful state visit of Philippine President Bongbong Marcos to India. They also focused on enhancing cooperation in the United Nations and the Indo-Pacific region.

Additionally, Jaishankar will deliver India’s national statement at the UNGA’s main podium on September 27. During this time, he will also participate in several other bilateral and multilateral discussions.
