Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has departed for the United States to hold peace talks with US President Donald Trump, following a severe overnight Russian assault on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. The two leaders are scheduled to meet in Florida on Sunday, where discussions are expected to focus on possible pathways toward ending the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Zelensky’s visit comes amid heightened tensions after fresh Russian strikes on Kyiv left one person dead and at least 28 others injured. According to Ukraine’s emergency services, the attacks targeted critical energy facilities as well as civilian infrastructure. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said damage to the power supply network has left nearly 4,000 residential buildings without heating, as temperatures in the city drop below freezing.

Visuals from Kyiv show high-rise buildings engulfed in flames, with large holes visible in several structures. Emergency teams continue rescue and debris-clearing operations across affected areas. Authorities also confirmed that 68 residents were evacuated from a retirement home in the eastern Darnytskyi district as a precaution.

President Zelensky stated that the latest attacks demonstrate that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s leadership has no intention of ending the war and is instead seeking to inflict greater suffering on Ukraine. He revealed that Kyiv was targeted overnight by around 500 Russian drones and 40 missiles, aimed largely at energy and civilian sites.

On his way to the United States, Zelensky is also scheduled to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. In addition, he has held talks with several key European leaders in recent hours to reinforce diplomatic coordination and international support for Ukraine.

In parallel, diplomatic contacts between Washington, Kyiv and Moscow have intensified in recent days. Zelensky said recent discussions with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner produced new ideas related to formats, timelines and potential steps toward achieving peace. While acknowledging that sensitive issues remain unresolved, he said progress is being made with the support of the American team.

On the Russian side, the Kremlin has confirmed it is reviewing proposals conveyed by its envoy following talks in the United States. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said further engagement with Washington would depend on decisions taken by Russia’s top leadership, but added that details of the proposals would remain confidential for now.

With Kyiv under renewed attack and high-level diplomatic engagements underway, observers believe the coming days could prove critical for ceasefire discussions and broader peace efforts in the region.
