US Cancels Visas of Key Figures Over New Social Media Regulations

By: The Trek News Desk

The United States has taken a firm stand on what it calls foreign-driven censorship by refusing visas to several prominent individuals linked to social media regulation. Among those affected is Thierry Breton, the former European Commissioner who played a major role in shaping the European Union’s digital policy framework.

According to the US State Department, five foreign nationals have been denied entry for allegedly attempting to pressure American social media companies into limiting or suppressing viewpoints they oppose. US officials argue that such actions amount to interference in American free speech and target both US citizens and US-based technology firms.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that certain radical activists and politically motivated non-governmental organisations have been working alongside foreign governments to push censorship agendas. He said these efforts represent a direct challenge to American sovereignty and freedom of expression.

Thierry Breton has been widely associated with the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), a law that enforces stricter content moderation rules on social media platforms. While European authorities maintain that the legislation is designed to create safer online spaces, critics in the US, particularly conservative groups, claim it disproportionately restricts right-wing opinions. The European Commission has rejected these allegations.

Breton has also had public disagreements with Elon Musk, the owner of the social media platform X. Recently, the European Commission imposed a fine of around €120 million on X, citing concerns over its blue tick verification system, which regulators described as misleading. Following the penalty, X reportedly blocked the Commission from placing advertisements on the platform.

Responding to the US visa decision, Breton posted on X that censorship exists in places Americans may not expect.

The visa restrictions also extend to Clare Melford, head of the UK-based Global Disinformation Index (GDI). US Undersecretary of State Sarah B. Rogers accused the organisation of using American taxpayer funds to promote censorship and blacklist US media outlets. GDI, however, condemned the move, calling it an attack on free speech and democratic values.

Imran Ahmed, founder of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), has also been barred from entering the US. American officials allege that he played a role in misusing government mechanisms against US citizens.

Additionally, Anna-Lena von Hodenberg and Josephine Ballon, leaders of the German group HateAid, were included in the visa ban list. In a joint statement, they described the action as an attempt to silence critics and warned against the erosion of democratic norms. They emphasised that they would continue advocating for human rights and freedom of expression.

Secretary Rubio said the measures target what he termed members of a “global censorship network.” He reiterated that the US would not tolerate external efforts to regulate or restrict American speech beyond its borders.
