The Union Cabinet of the Government of India has approved the proposal to officially rename the State of Kerala as “Keralam.” The announcement was made on Tuesday by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, confirming that the Centre has accepted the State government’s request.
The decision comes ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in the State, which are expected to take place in April-May this year.
The Kerala Legislative Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution on June 24, 2024, urging the Centre to change the State’s name from “Kerala” to “Keralam.” An earlier resolution had also been adopted, but the Ministry of Home Affairs suggested certain technical modifications. Following those recommendations, the Assembly passed the revised resolution again.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who introduced the resolution, stated that the State is referred to as “Keralam” in Malayalam. He emphasised that the demand for a unified State for Malayalam-speaking people dates back to the period of India’s freedom struggle.
Vijayan had also urged the Union Government to ensure that the name “Keralam” is reflected in all languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, thereby formally recognising the State’s linguistic identity and cultural heritage.
With Cabinet approval now granted, the proposal will move forward through the required constitutional and administrative procedures. Once the official notification is issued, the name “Keralam” will be adopted in all government records and official documents.
