North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly selected his teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, as his successor, according to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS). The intelligence agency briefed lawmakers on Thursday, stating that recent developments point toward her formal designation as heir.
The NIS assessment is based on what it describes as a “range of circumstances,” particularly Kim Ju Ae’s expanding presence at major state events. In recent months, she has been seen accompanying her father at high-profile ceremonies, including celebrations marking the founding anniversary of the Korean People’s Army and visits to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun.
Lawmakers were told that there are also indications she has begun expressing views on certain state policies, an unusual role for someone her age.
South Korean legislator Lee Seong-kwen said that while Ju Ae had earlier been described as being in training for succession, intelligence officials now believe she has entered the “designation stage” as the likely heir.
The NIS is also closely monitoring whether Kim Ju Ae will attend the upcoming Workers’ Party Congress later this month. The event, held once every five years, is North Korea’s most significant political gathering and typically outlines national priorities, including foreign policy direction, military strategy, and nuclear ambitions.
Her participation in such a high-level meeting would further reinforce the perception of her rising political status.
Kim Ju Ae is widely believed to be around 13 years old and is considered the only publicly acknowledged child of Kim Jong Un and his wife, Ri Sol Ju. South Korean intelligence has previously suggested that Kim may have an older son, though he has never appeared in state media.
Ju Ae first appeared on North Korean television in 2022 during an inspection of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), where she was seen holding her father’s hand. Since then, she has frequently featured in official photographs and state media coverage.
She has also accompanied her father on overseas visits, including a trip to China for a major military parade. Observers have noted her distinctive appearance and attire, which often differ from the norms followed by ordinary North Koreans.
The possibility of a female successor in North Korea has surprised many analysts, given the country’s deeply patriarchal structure. However, Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, already holds a senior role within the ruling Workers’ Party and is considered highly influential, suggesting that women can wield significant power within the regime.
Observers are also questioning why Kim Jong-un, who is still relatively young and appears to be in stable health, would designate such a young successor at this stage.
Power in North Korea has passed down through three generations of the Kim family, and many believe the regime is preparing for a fourth. However, it remains unclear what policy direction Kim Ju Ae might take if she eventually assumes leadership.
When Kim Jong Un came to power, there were expectations that his Western education might lead to greater openness in the country. Those hopes largely went unmet.
Now, attention is shifting to whether Kim Ju Ae, if she ultimately takes the reins, could shape North Korea’s future differently or continue the established path of dynastic rule.
